Our 7th Annual Trip to the 2012 Annual Ely Rotary Club's Cave Lake Ice Fishing Derby will start on Friday Morning with a quick stop at Echo Canyon to fish and check out the ice situation for our return fishing trip on Sunday. We hope to see you all on the Ice at the Derby! Fish permitting, we will once again be about 100 yards Southwest of the launch ramp. Look for our famous "Iced Lightning" Mega Sled and share a brew, a shot of Jack, or some breakfast with us! Also, I will once again be riding one of the ATV Sleds around the Lake and taking photos of this years event. Don't forget to say cheese and wave hello to the camera!!!
Angler 1 Sportfishing's 2012 Ely Rotary Club's Ice Fishing Derby Trip to Cave Lake
It's usually a fantastic, absolutely beautiful day on Saturday and everyone catches lots of fish. Be sure to bring your camera as we get some great pictures and stories.
Once again this year the derby has a five fish limit. 25 tagged fish will be worth $100 each.
One of those tagged fish will be worth $5,000!!!
In three of the last six derbys I have seen the Grand Prize fish caught, 11 tagged fish caught, and the smallest and largest fish caught. I haven't caught a tagged fish myself yet, but we do limit out every time. They are usually small stockies, but the chance for some larger fish is always there.

A number from one of the eligible tagged fish will be drawn after the derby and that lucky number will be the winner of the $5,000 Grand Prize.
A couple of years back the Rotary Club also decided to add two separate cash prizes and award them to two of the contestants of the derby just for showing up and entering.
After to the drawing for the Grand Prize, a drawing will be held for an extra bonus prize.
Catch And Release Is Allowed This Year! However, only live, healthy, uninjured Trout may be returned to the water.
Our Early Transportation will leave at approximately 7 or 8am on Friday and will spend the day fishing and the night in a Yurt at the Cave lake Campground in order to get a refreshed and early start at the derby for a change.
Our 2nd unit of transportation will leave Las Vegas at approximately 4am on Saturday morning. We will arrive at the derby at about 8am and fish till 3pm or until all of our limits are caught. Then, after the derby & prize drawings we'll continue back down the mountain to the hotel and casino in Ely for a hot dinner, warm drinks, and a little bit of rest.
Sunday morning we'll all meet up at a designated time for a hearty breakfast and decide which will be the best place to get back out on the ice. Do we go fish for the Big Rainbow Trout in Illipah Reservoir? How about the Brown and Tiger Trout action at Eagle Valley and Echo Canyon? Or do we just head down to Sunnyside for some super Rainbow and Largemouth Bass action?.
2012 Ice Fishing Derby
We are making plans to go to the derby again. We will be taking 4 Anglers on Friday and 8 Anglers on Saturday to the Ely Rotary Club Ice Fishing Derby at Cave Lake this year.

Basically, the key word here is warmth. You should bring blankets and chairs, your own gear (though tackle is provided). Be sure to dress warm and in layers... we do not know how cold it will be. From my experience in past years, it is usually VERY cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon!
Ski Pants or bibs, wool socks and hat, warm WATERPROOF boots, longjohns, and gloves are recommended.
